Clients unable to connect - undefined message type 84?

I've been beating my head over this all day...
I have my server setup and working - local connection works fine, connecting from the other computers on my lan works fine - but connecting from the internet does not. The server does pick up on the incoming connection, but what happens on the client's end is that the client freezes on the "Verifying account" screen. There is no problem with the account (at least I'm fairly sure, heh).. these have been tested and work fine when connecting locally or through the lan... ports and server addresses should be fine for the same reason, and also because the clients do connect.. only they hang on the verification...
The only clue that something is amiss is the following msg that appears when the client connects:
Undefined message type 84
Unexpected message type 84, 62 bytes (IP:####, Account:None)
Does anyone have an idea what might be the problem?
Edit:
Before anyone asks, I have already forwarded the port through my router!
