Regarding the distro scripts

I have been trying to compile the POL 96 distro scripts and have encountered many errors. I had thought that the tortoise releases were atleast supposed to compile. Was I mistaken?

I am posting the compiler errors in the "bugs" forum in this section.

Please be aware that this is a live development environment.
Things will change and at times a script may not compile.

Thanks Danielle. I do remember seeing that now that you reminded me.

I am fixing the problems I find.

Folks,
Have you done any more work on converting the 095 distro to 096?

With work proceeding on the 097 beta distro it leaves an obvious hole. We don't have anything to offer new scripters who come in looking for a good base start for running the latest release core.

The experience of POL scripters seems to vary enormously from the very new through to people who even understand how to make an aux script. I fear we are losing potential new scripters by not having something we can point them to. Pol is hard enough as it is, and most of us are NOT professional programmers - it's just a hobby.

I already know what the problem is going to be - the better scripters are already playing with 097, the middle of the road plodders like me are working furiously on updating old shards to 096 and those starting out are frustrated.

Kiko:
Last I checked, only two scripts, both skill scripts (Muad's projects) did not compile in the distro everything else did.

OldnGrey:
Who said I am a professional programmer ? This is a hobby for me too.
If it was a job, Muad, Shini, Adam and I would be making money off of POL, right? We do it, because like the admins who run shards, we too enjoy it.

Many shard admins whine about how their players treat them, then turn around and do it back to us. :?

Thanks Austin. This was an old thread of mine but OldnGrey does have a point. I can't figure out what is going on now with the Distro. ARe we even going to have an official release of 096 Distro scripts? I was hoping for one. I have plodded slowly through the 095 conversion process in hopes we'd see a fully released 096 Disytro and now I see there are screen shots of 097 Distro things. Now understand I think it's great that there is already work on the 097 Distro but like OldnGrey says there really needs to be a fully working 096 Distro for people who are coming in to POL for the first time. Not to mention for people like me who mooch the Distro and add our own stuff.

Yes I am lazy OK. I admit it.

And a note to Aus about the admin comment. I agree. I have seen how quickly players can turn against the staff and get really nasty. I don't mind someone expressing disagreement but please try to remain civil. I try to remember that you all are doing this for free. I hope I don't sound like some whiny player.

Unfortunately yes, the 096 distro isnt gonna happen.
1. I don't want to work on two distros at once.
2. I don't want to finish 096 and then have to turn around and update scripts for 097.
3. Its better if while I work on a newer core, that I work on a distro to test what I am doing.

There will be a public beta of 097 soon. The development of this core is moving fairly quickly. The script changes required are very minimal to use it.

So what you are saying is the amount of changes from Distro 96 (which doesn't exist) to 97 will be minor? Will there be a full and completely working POL 97 Distro set then? I don't mean to sound cantankerous here but it has been traditional with POL that with every major core release there has been a corresponding Distro package. I have to admit I am still a tad confused as to what to expect. Sorry if this sounds like I'm complaining but maybe I am. I'm human too I guess.

Im gonna try to have a working distro with 097. Its just me working on most of the distro, Tekproxy and Unreal are helping where they can. If more people downloaded the distro and submitted compatable code, it could move a lot faster.

I thought I was restricted to just small bugs and magery... Now my dark work can truely begin....

[edit]
Nevermind.
Austin: No, you ARE restricted to magery, so finish it, bitch :_P

Austin,

I think the problem with "most people" is the one I have. I am busy attempting to get a new map fixed up for use, get working scripts under POL 96 so players can play and report bugs, provide support for GMs who have questions and ofcourse continue converting what is atleast a complete scriptbase (under POL 95 anyway) to POL 96. This is no small task for one person. I suppose most are in that same boat. 96 Distro isn't even a playable scriptbase. In fact I don't know what progress has been made with it. The SVN updates seem to have stopped.

Understand I realize that it's mostly only you working on the Distro but wouldn't it be more prudent to finish a Distro for 96 then go onto getting POL 97 started? You said yourself that "The script changes required are very minimal to use it." reffering to POL 97.

Please realize in the midst of my comments (yeah maybe it's whining) I am very very grateful for what you do. It just seems you've got the cart before the horse this time.

Maybe I'll take a crack at the Distro 96 files again. I guess I'm just getting old cause I hate relearning a whole new geography for the POL directory.
*sighs*

Im wondering.. are you looking at the SVN for berlios (old) or sourceforge (new)... because I only stopped 096 a couple weeks ago.

I believe it's the new one posted here - http://forums.polserver.com/viewtopic.php?t=520

Atleast that's what I setup.

Yeah thats the newest stuff.. I guess what you could do is get the 097, then edit the pkg.cfg files to use 096, and edit the stuff to work with 096...

Well, I would be willing to just run 97 as of now but I assume the distro for that is still being made right?

Its in active development. You can download the scripts for it following the instructions in that post you linked to previously.

There should be an 097 core out fairly soon, too. Shinigami said he was setting up all the new files Muad and I added yesterday morning.

You guys are going like awsome-crazy-fast

At this rate, I might end up skipping 096 entirely! :P

what i dont understand is why the 096 distro wasnt just left and a new folder for 097 distro be made that way people downloading what was a semi working distro 096 could still use it and develope on their own from there? apparently and ive been helping people with this all day when they download the distro now fromt he 096 dir it complains and tells them to upgrade to 097 which to my knowledge isnt even released? just seems alittle dodgy thats all

Its so dodgy that its a big conspiracy.. okay this topic is locked.
Im not going to let people order me around and tell me what to do when i've in the past asked for help and only three people stepped up...
Unreal/Montuz, Abner and Tekproxy.
