In theory, is there a limit on how many players pol handles?

Post by Snocks »

Hey!

Lately I started thinking, how many players would pol handle really? It does not really use that much reasources of the computer, so that won't be a limiting factor. But is there any limit before scripts will cause problems?

I am currently having around 250 people on my shard, and its growing fast (only been open for 5 weeks or so). And im not really using much resources at all.

As long as you script efficiently, have a good server computer, and have a good connection, you'll be fine. I don't think we've found a known limit to the number of connections on newer POL versions yet. But with the way they have been improving the core, I'm sure that number just keeps rising.

In connection, just think of having a maximum of about 5kb/sec upstream for each player. Although it'll only hit that in a very crowded area.

If your CPU usage starts going up, look into your script profiles and find out what scripts are taking the most load. Start looking into them and figuring out how they can be scripted better to take less instructions. If they're not time critical, consider lowering the priority or inserting more or longer sleeps into the scripts.

As for RAM usage, I've heard POL has problems with higher amounts of RAM use even if there is more memory available. But for specifics, you'll actually have to find out from either someone who has had that problem or one of the core devs. To eliminate this problem, try doing things to encourage reducing the number of items on your shard. Things like checks for gold, a recycling program for old/useless items, ect...

Yeah. Currently my server computer with webserver and all takes 700 mb of ram after 4-5 days of uptime. Though the shard only been up for 5 weeks so theres not many items yet. I will prolly do as you suggested about the checks thing.

Prolly won't get enough players for it to cause any problems though I guess.

Also, im using less then 0.5 kb/s upstream per client normally. 150 players online makes pol take around 30-40 kb/s upstream. And downstream less then that.

Like I said, 5kb/sec maximum. If you run a huge monster bash with a ton of players in it, you'll peak near that amount for that short period.
