Managing Servers

Post by Gigabyte »

Hey All,

Just a quick question in regards to operation a pol server at the optimal processor settings.

Atm im running
Windows Server 2008 Standard
Intel(r) Core(TM) 2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz 3.17GHz
4 GB Ram 64-bit Operating System

Now the server is running great. But thought id ask what would be prefered for a large server (100+ Players online)

How should i choose to allocate the processor resources.

Adjust for programs or background services.

The ram is sitting at 50% being used atm

And windows auto allocates the page file size.

Cheers

That will easily support 100+ players without even blinking. As long as the scripts are scripted with at least some sense and there aren't other programs constantly taking 100% CPU, you shouldn't have a problem. We used to have 200+ online on my shard with a computer that doesn't even come close to that and it ran fine. It wasn't even top of the line when we got it 7 years ago and it ran easily until we retired the computer 3 years ago. I can play Unreal Tournament 3 on the current server computer now (Intel Pentium 4 550 3.4GHz, 2GB PC4200 RAM, Windows XP) and no one on the server actually notices.

I am going to speculate here but I believe the philosophy behind POL was to create a server that would run well on "low budget" computers. It is a testimony to the developers that even after all this time and all the improvements to POL it still continues to run very efficiently.

It's a very elegant piece of software.

Depending on the IO performance of the machine too, you can save memory by setting the mapserver to run on file instead of memory for realm map files. (in their cfg file after being generated, just change it. can find info in core-changes).

Linux for example, REALLY takes advantage of this because POL can just scream writing/reading in linux. Windows is a bit slower to interact with the hard drives unfortunately.

Scripts do play a very big factor. So be careful in your script design. Good programming comes into play here. I ran 250-300 online with a machine that had just 768mb ram, running Server 2k Advanced, on a Duron 1200+ processor for over a year that had no problems. I even ran other applications on it without it affecting POL. Such as various Adobe programs, etc.
