 Post subject: Multiple servers?
PostPosted: Fri Nov 10, 2006 5:35 am
Hi,

I'm new in this thing and I was wondering one thing. Is it possible to run 2 POLs in one machine? ie. the game server and build/test server. I have tried to just run 2 POLs from different directories but that doesn't seem to work :P

Thank you for your replies.

You need two seperate directories (copies) and you need to run the instances of POL on different ports.

Remember to configure each POL in the pol.cfg and the /config/servers.cfg to use a different ports than eachother. I do this on mine all the time...

Live server - 5004 in POL.cfg and servers.cfg

then in another path for development

Dev server - 5005 in POL.cfg and servers.cfg

Something to add, also;

Keep in mind that the servers.cfg is the configuration for something that is really a totally separate thing from the game server, as far as the client is concerned.

That is, the client, when you first enter your login info, is connecting to the "Login Server". The connection info for this comes from the login.cfg that the CLIENT has, which tells it where the find the login server.

The login server checks the login credentials, and assuming that succeeds, it then sends the client a list of servers to connect to. This is where the POL servers.cfg comes in; That is where that list that gets sent to the client comes from.

So, you can use your servers.cfg to have both servers show up on the same list. You would simply add one entry for each server in BOTH server's servers.cfg files; That way, no matter which server they initially connect to for login, they can then get into either one.

On the other hand, maybe you don't WANT people to be able to see both, in which case, ignore the above!

Yeah, that's the very nice thing about POL's server listings. You have have a single pol.exe that contains the accounts.txt that matches the other servers (Very important!), and list 20 different shards if you want, that they connect to.

You know, I never knew this about servers.cfg. It would be nice if the "Keeper of the POL docs" would add this tidbit to the knowledge base as well.

The entry for servers.cfg pretty well lays it out, without going so far as making a tutorial of it. I think it even says something to the effect of, "You could run a lean POL server as a login server only, to direct people to multiple servers", or something like that. If I'm remembering the wording right, it did strike me as odd that it would suggest you would need a separate server to do that - which does work... but you can also just as easily use any of the multiple servers themselves to all point to each other, or to any other server you want at all.

this feature has nothing to do with servers.cfg, it's a client-feature... and I'm sure it's documented in some packet-lists
