Post subject: NPCs do not answer Posted: Fri Jun 09, 2006 5:02 am |

Hi,
I have installed Ultima Online Mondain's Legency 5.0.0b (5.0.2b??) and POL 095. Razor removes the client encryption. Connect works fine and I can use the 2d or 3d client to walk around in the standard world.
For some reason, I can not talk with NPCs e.g. in order to buy stuff. Is there some configuration necessary to talk with NPCs in the standard world?

No. IMHO the .mul files are taken from the server's uo installation and the speech.mul is there. What I don't know is if pol has read the speech.mul.
I don't have any .mul files in the pol directory.

Remove the speech.mul file or rename it to something different then try it.

I think there might be a tiny bit of confusion here; the speech.mul that needs to be removed is the one in the CLIENT dir, not the server. POL doesn't use speech.mul at all, but if it exists on the client, the client will send speech.mul codes to POL, instead of the actual speech. POL095 has no clue what to do with those codes, so you won't be able to 'say' anything at all that matches one of the entries in speech.mul.
If you rename your CLIENT's speech.mul file, the client won't find those entries, and will instead send the 'real' text to POL, and it'll all work from there.
POL096, by the way, is able to be made to handle those codes from the client, which is why Shini asked if you were using 095.

@Marilla: Great explanation. I'll install pol 096 and see if it works.

But 096 is way more work than deleting your speech.mul file. An 095 scriptbase wont work well with 096 if it works at all...

I just started with POL and do not have any selfmade scripts. My problem would be that there is currently no auto-installer for 096

the scriptbase for 096 isnt made yet thats why. You'd have to convert an 095 scriptbase, create your own, or wait for the 096 scriptbase to be completed. Either way, its easier to stick with 095 and just delete speech.mul for now.

sid, just go to your Ultima Online folder and rename the speech.mul file to speech.old and then try using POL 95. It should work.

Some of our users reported, that they had to remove the UO CD from the CD drive, for UO seems to look even there for a speech.mul
