Thats all verdata.mul ever was was just an override/patch file for other files. I guess they finally realized it was just a useless thing since newer clients dont even look at verdata anymore.

Thanks. I have tyo admit it seems odd that they took so long to d=get rid of it. I mean considering how big the patches are.

Now I have to move all those neat things in my verdata to my art and gump files unless someone out there knows of a program that can do that for me.

*looks hopeful*

The really nice thing about using verdata is that you can use it freely, without needing to worry at all about screwing up your players' UO files; since EA doesn't use it, you won't ever be overwriting something that will screw up what players need to still play OSI, or other shards.

Of course, it's just as easy to get that effect by hex-editing a custom-named client, and providing custom-named files as well. Then again, some use UOGateway, and make this whole discussion moot.

All of that said, though; I don't see how using verdata or not makes patches smaller or larger; If you a truly 'patching' the files, it wouldn't make any difference at all. (except if you are one of the shards out there forcing players to patch/over-write their default UO files, shame on you! )... on the other hand, if you are providing the ENTIRE files that you are changing to be downloaded, the verdata method is much, much, much SMALLER in size (if you do it right, and if you don't have a verdata that has been packed with hundreds of megabytes of junk).

Our verdata has a few more things than we really need for one thing. I got it from a defunct shard so there is a lot of junk we don't use. That should reduce the size some. All I really wanted from it were the new clothes.

As to not messing up peoples UO, UO Gateway handles all of that quite nicely. You can setup custom patch files and as long as you have a website to host them it will download them and apply them whilst leaving the original UO un defiled. The patches are unique to that shards entry and are not applied universally.
