Anyone who has seen my posts from past days knows I love to give as much help on the forums as I can even though sometimes my help is anything but helpful but unfortunately when it comes to the question of "How do I convert from POL 0.95 to POL 0.97?" it cannot be easily answered here. Atleast not with specific details. However there are some important things to know that will help you in your work.

1. Learn eScript. If you have some scripting experience then the conversion process will be easier. I guess that's pretty obvious huh?

2. Read or atleast have available the POL 0.97 documentation. It is your life saver when converting. Uhm, yeah another obvious point too I guess.

3. Read the 'corechanges.txt' file. That will tell you what changes were made and when. Well, the 'when' part isn't as specific as I'd like because only the month and day are noted in the file. Atleast that's how it was last time I looked at it. One of the best ways I found to use it was to search the file using a POL EM function to see if there were any changes to it for POL 0.97. For example if you search for CreateItemAtLocation you'll find the info you need to make the conversion for that function.

4. Have the Official POL Distro for POL 0.97 available. The developers have been working hard to get it out there and you can use it as a reference to see how they did things and they know their stuff when it comes to scripting.

The biggest conversion hurdle is in the functions that reference locations such as the afore mentioned CreateItemAtLocation function. This is due to the addition of the realm parameter. One of the trickier functions in that regard is CreateNPCFromTemplate because the override_properties parameter was sometimes omitted when this function was invoked because the UO.EM file provided a default value of 0. So when you add the realm parameter you will have to remember to insert an explicit value for override_properties before the realm value if it doesn't exist. Some other functions that present this type of difficulty are the "location specific effects" functions such as PlayMovingEffectXYZ.

Another issue that will come up is the whole magic system. The developers have made a great deal of changes there as well. I believe the changes are for the better because the system is more flexible and gives much of the control to the scripts. The corechanges.txt file will be invaluable there too.

My last piece of advice you already know. If you need help with a specific conversion problem then post the problem here on the forums and we'll gladly try to help you.

I wish I could be more specific but truthfully it's mostly just ploughing through the scripts and changing what needs to be changed.

There's a lot of us who've gone through the painful yet rewarding process of upgrading. I'd appreciate it if anyone else could add to these tips.
