After 6 Month of development, the new Iris Team released "Iris2".
Everything is coded from the scratch!
Featuring a new 3D-Engine with Shader support: http://www.ogre3d.org/. "Iris2" supports Linux and WindowsXP (OSX in future). We use FMod as Music Engine and Lua for scripting. The whole Gamelogic is scripted in Lua for easy modifications from Shard-Development-Teams. "Iris2" also includes a 2D-Renderer and you can switch inGame from 3D to 2D and vice versa.
I played with iris2 for quite a few hours and it seemed a lot faster than it used to be. I was able to logon and do most of the normal things on my shard without recompiling the client.
Quite a lot of detailed errors though, too numerous to mention; mostly around screen presentation. It's nowhere near ready to recommend as a client on my shard, but it's very promising indeed.
nice to see people testing our first release version. We are working on Iris2 all the time.
@OldnGrey: Please report all things to get Iris2 to a playable stage for your shard to our bugtracker or to me. We cant add a shard specific features to Iris2 (esp. custom Art) but we give you a nice tool to checkout such things.
1. Fallback billboards for Art -Tiles that don't have a 3D-Model yet.
2. press key: F10 to hide Billboards of MultiTile Objects.
If Shards want to use Iris2 in future we need support from the community to develop the first playable and independent Client for Freeshards (regardless which Server-Emulator you use).
I hope this is the future of the UO Freeshard community and I hope Shard-Developers see the potential of freedom.

You have POL's support on the project for sure. A custom Open Source freeshard client is always welcome to the community here. I wish I just had more time to play with it. Core, distro, and a shard I am working on currently keep me too busy (outside of irl). :/

I've not tested it by myself (missing time) but took a look @ the dev-screenies... very nice.
I've forwarded the announce to "my" shard, just take a look to get some response: http://www.welt-pergon.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13147 (laßt euch nich vom Dümmsülz einiger mit dem IQ eines gelähmten Grashalmes abschrecken; gerade der Install-Kram könnte nicht uninteressant sein...)
@Shinigami: Thx that your spread my Info around.
